tidying up

Mon Jan 14, 2008, 5:22 AM
I recently deleted over nine hundred deviations from my deviantwatch. I had kinda been letting them pile up more and more, to the point where I realized I was never going to be able to go through all of them anymore. A new year is time for a fresh start! It should take me at least four years to accumulate that many again. ^^;

A helpful deviant recently alerted me to my first ever case of art plagiarism! You can see a screencap here -- the "artist" in question basically did a hack job of cutting Tutu out of my piece here, and pasting her on a white background along with a similarly badly extracted Fakir, drawn by some artist I've yet to identify. What I find the most hilarious is that they tried to pass this off as a single piece drawn by a single original artist, when Tutu and Fakir are drawn in completely different styles. XD I censored the person's username because they took down the piece already, so no point in stirring up more wank, but I still found it too amusing not to share. Also check out their response to being caught:

My comment: Hi there! I'm the artist of one of the pieces you plagiarized to make this. This is to let you know that I fully intend to report this to DeviantArt. But before I do that, I figured I'd give you a fair chance to take it down of your own free will.

Their reply: ...huh? oh.

CLASSY!

Just to warn you, DA will ban you if you accuse someone of ripping you off, even if you're right. I found someone on DA tracing my work and spoke up in the comments section, and some DA admin came down and snotted at me for doing so, and then banned me... despite the fact that it was MY work being ripped.

Anyway, just a heads up.

Do you feel lucky? Well? Do ya, punk?
:iconandrael:
That's... not right. O_o Maybe that particular admin was biased or abusing their powers? At any rate, next time something like this happens I guess I should just go straight to the "report this" button rather than bothering with comments. I don't suppose they can ban someone for using that button for what it was meant for.

You know I don't think it's gonna help you hid that username.... I just went to your front page, clicked on your activity, searched for a comment you made on the deviation with that name and bam, there's the artist. You would have to hide your activity button to keep the thief TRULY unknown, but I doubt anyone cares enough the hunt down the person for flames etc.

Thanks for the tip! I always forget about that 'view activity' link. I've set it to private now.

...that is one of the laziest art jacks I've ever seen. The reponse just kind of sinches it.

"...huh? oh"?

Best internet apology ever.

I've had my work stolen many times on DA and posted about it to my friends on my journal and even gave comments to the thieves. o_O I never got banned. Did you perhaps say some unsavory words when you posted your comments?

Though I've heard of this going on before, I had some friends suffer for similar and even stuff that was entirely untrue (one friend was accused of stealing official game art when she just draws INSANELY well and it was entirely original work o.O). DA sucks when it comes to justice, I think.

You'd think if you reported literally HALF if not ALL of someone's dA gallery as stolen that they'd bann the person entirely. But noooooooooo.

Yeah, *damnskippy has a point. You do have to be careful when commenting to or discussing art thieves here on DA. It is not that DA will ban you for talking to or about them though. Although, it is best to disguise thier identities when discussing them on journal entries.

What the art theft victims, and many times their friends as well, tend to get banned for is abusive, hateful, and/or inflammatory mob-producing comments. They file that sort of behavior under DA Abuse somewhere around the harrassment and hate speech departments. You should be fine.

Wow, that's one eloquently worded thief. Geeze.
I can tell you where the Fakir is from though. That's an official image from the anime that floats about online. Looks like they did some minor editing to lengthen the over-shirt.

At least, I'm pretty sure it's either an official image or a trace of one.
